The DoorPost Film Project Screening

The DoorPost Film Project Screening

The Florida Times-Union and Jacksonville.com announce the launch of Cinemania, a community-based group from which filmmakers and videographers may launch successful careers and amateur video producers may make the leap to professional.

Cinemania’s first event will be held Monday, February 15, 8:00 p.m. at the Five Points Theatre, 1022 Park Street, Jacksonville, Florida. Featured will be the top short film winners of The 2009 DoorPost Film Project competition. Each film is twenty minutes in length or shorter. Admission is free and open to the public.

The DoorPost films to be screened include The Butterfly Circus, La Premiere, The Rift and Guest Room.

The Grand Prize Winner of $100,000, The Butterfly Circus, directed by Joshua Weigel, is a touching story set during the Great Depression. It’s a beautifully stylish film about the showman of a circus leading his troupe through the devastated American landscape, lifting the spirits of audiences along the way. During their travels they discover a man without limbs at a carnival sideshow. However, after an intriguing encounter with the showman he becomes driven to hope against everything he has ever believed.

The Second Place Winner of $35,000 is La Premiere directed by Michael Regalbuto. This story focuses on the Lumiere Brothers, Auguste and Louis, a pair of young inventors who dream of making images big enough for the whole world to see. Based on a true story, La Premiere tells the exciting tale of the invention of cinema as we know it. It’s a story about possibility and believing that with hard work and vision, you can make the impossible possible.

DoorPost’s Third Place Winner of $25,000 is The Rift directed by Brent McCorkle. It’s about a man who wakes up in a strange place where the sun never shines. He fears the worst-that he has somehow ended up in Hell. But can hope exist, even in a place as dark as this and can one act of love forever change the course of someone’s life?

The Filmmaker Choice Winner of $15,000 is Guest Room directed by Greg Kwedar. When a recluse discovers a young man unconscious at a remote highway rest stop, his choice to help changes his journey north to Colorado in ways he never could have imagined.

The Doorpost Film Project exists to encourage truth-seeking visionaries by honoring their creativity as filmmakers, serving them in the context of building community and sharing their discoveries with the world so that others may have hope.
